KEEP THOSE HOME FIRE BURNING IT WILL REFRESH YOU RIGHT WHEN YOU NEED IT THE MOST

There lived two boys in a small village called Bompata in the northern region of Ghana. Their names were Bidi and Zidi. They were so closed that many people thought that they were brothers, but it was not so. Bidi was born on Friday evening whilst Zidi was born on Saturday morning, Bidi’s house is opposite to Zidi’s house. They ate in each other’s house, slept in each other’s house and did everything together. Bidi’s father was a farmer and his mother was a petty trader, whilst Zidi’s father was fisherman and his mother a fishmonger. Sometimes both families practice barter trading that is Bidi’s father will bring foodstuffs such as
maize, cassava, plantain among others to Zidi’s father in exchange of fish. This system both families adopted made their live enjoyable.
Not so long and these two boys (Bidi and Zidi) started schooling. They were all in the same class. These boys paid attention in class and contributed very well. Bidi and Zidi became good, clever and discipline students that most of their teachers began to liked them. When they got to primary six a letter came from the district education office stating that there was going to be and inter schools quiz competition and every school should make it a point to bring two representatives for the upcoming event. Fortunately for them because of their intelligence they were selected to represent their school. Even though they were delighted it did not prevented them from learning so as to win the ultimate prize. The day of the event came and as that was their first time of sitting before a large audience they feared and panicked a little, but that did not hinder their performance.
Bidi and Zidi did put off their best during the competition. There were ten(10) schools in all partaking in the event but in the end when the results were declared, Bidi and Zidi made their school proud and won for themselves scholarship. The scholarship entailed their junior high education as well as their senior high education been catered for free of charge by the government. This news brought about tears of joy to their parents. Bidi and Zidi did not give up and continued their tremendous work as far as academics was concern. Furthermore they made it with ease when their BECE results were released and had admission to one of the best second cycle institution in Ghana. Bidi and Zidi were happy because they made it to that far and also said to themselves that the sky was their limit. Their parents were also glad not because their sons have been able to make it to the secondary level but rather the government coming to their aid with scholarship for their sons because this was the exact time they were going through difficulties in terms of funds to support their wards education.
Moreover on their first day in their new school they were taken through orientation. During this process their head teacher asked each and every student present what their ambitions were. So every student said what his or her future career was one after the other until it got to Zidi and Bidi’s turn, fortunately both
of them said engineering. It was there Bidi and Zidi knew that they were all after the same course and this even strengthen their friendship. After the head teacher had listened to everyone’s future career he advised them that in this world life is like a race if you don’t run fast you will be trampled upon and that everyone should work hard to achieve his or her aim. Bidi and Zidi took this advice and it helped them a lot. As a minute lost can never be gained they continued focusing on their studies because they knew they were from a poor family background and also never engaged themselves in any kind of behavior that will bring to them any havoc or disturbance to their parent.
More-so it was not long enough for them to bid goodbye to their second level of education and advance to the tertiary level. Both Bidi and Zidi had the same school which was Imperial College of Engineering. Unfortunately for them their scholarship has expired and they had to pay for their expenses. Their parent also tried their best to provide their needs but it was not enough. So they decided to be visiting construction sites whenever they have no lectures to work as labourers and do all kinds of nasty jobs to earn them some money to keep them going. It got to a time Zidi was fed up and was about dropping out of school because he did not get money to pay for a particular field project at school. Bidi came to his aid and encouraged him that as winners never quit and quitters never win he should move on because no condition is permanent. Bidi then gave him the amount he needed for the project and Zidi thanked Bidi for he thought all hope was lost.
They continued to struggle and encourage each other until their four-year program in the Imperial College of Engineering was over and they obtained a first class degree. They were assigned attachment to different companies and they finished successfully. Unfortunately for them they were not selected and still hustling for a job. They then came to a consensus to split in search of greener pastures. So Bidi went to the Volta Region and Zidi went to the Western Region. Zidi was so fortunate that he got employed on his first application he wrote to a mining company and was giving the position as the technician in charge of all the machines in the company. Bidi on the other side was still struggling in the Volta
Region and was wondering why a person of his caliber who has obtained a first class degree in engineering was still hustling for a job.
After a year of total hardship for Bidi in the Volta Region he said to himself “there is no place like home”. So he went back to his hometown to live with his parent. Zidi also came back home for his annual leave he had obtained from his company and it was there he saw Bidi for the first time since they separated. They were happy and they all narrated their story to each other. Zidi felt pity for Bidi but fortunately Zidi’s company had vacancy. On Zidi’s arrival to the company he went with Bidi and recommended him to the company. Bidi’s document was processed and went through interview. Later he was told he has acquired the job and he is starting work with immediate effect. Bidi got excited and broke the news to Zidi and thanked him for his kind gesture Zidi then remembered Bidi that way back in school he helped in the payment of his field project that is why he has also helped him to get a job. So they all said in chorus “Keep those home fires burning it will refresh you right when you need it the most”.
